Kruger National Park Goes Green with Renewable Energy Deal
SANParks has launched a landmark renewable energy partnership to decarbonise the Kruger National Park, aiming to offset 25% of its annual electricity usage.
A Sustainable Future for the Kruger
South African National Parks (SANParks) has officially entered into a strategic renewable energy agreement with Ampli Energy. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the park's centenary year, focusing on reducing the environmental footprint of South Africa's premier safari destination.
The Power of Wheeling
Rather than installing large-scale infrastructure that would require precious conservation land, SANParks is utilizing a 'wheeling' model. This allows the park to receive renewable electricity through power purchase agreements that match supply to the park's demand.
- Emission Reduction: The Kruger currently accounts for approximately 70% of SANParks' Scope 2 emissions.
- Energy Target: The new agreement enables the park to source renewable electricity equivalent to more than 25% of its annual consumption.
- Strategic Partnership: The arrangement leverages South Africa's industrial energy system, with the Secunda complex acting as a backstop off-taker for the portfolio.
Expanding the Vision
SANParks CEO Hapiloe Sello noted that this model is the most cost-effective and efficient route to decarbonisation. Following the successful implementation at Kruger, the organisation is already evaluating the feasibility of expanding this renewable energy model to other national parks across the country in the coming years.
