West Coast National Park Boosts Local Enterprise Development
West Coast National Park has successfully integrated local fishing cooperatives and small businesses into its operational ecosystem, fostering regional economic growth.
Empowering Local Communities Through Conservation
In a significant move to strengthen the relationship between protected areas and their surrounding communities, the West Coast National Park (WCNP) recently celebrated a milestone in local enterprise development. As of mid-September 2026, the park has formally engaged with 20 members from three local small-scale fishing cooperatives and 25 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Building Sustainable Partnerships
This initiative focuses on creating tangible economic opportunities for residents living near the park. By integrating local service providers into the park's supply chain, SANParks aims to ensure that the benefits of conservation extend directly to the people who live alongside these natural treasures. The program provides:
- Direct access to park procurement opportunities for local MSMEs.
- Support for sustainable fishing practices within the park's coastal zones.
- Skills development workshops to enhance business management capabilities.
A Model for Future Conservation
This collaborative approach serves as a blueprint for other national parks across South Africa. By prioritizing local skills and enterprise, the WCNP is not only protecting biodiversity but also ensuring that the tourism and conservation sectors act as engines for job creation and economic stability in the Western Cape region.
