Northern Parks Offer Final Weekend of Free Day Entry
SANParks concludes its 21st SA National Parks Week this weekend, with northern reserves including Golden Gate, Mapungubwe, and Marakele welcoming visitors. Day visitors with valid South African IDs can explore the bushveld and mountain trails at no charge through Sunday.
Bushveld and Mountain Reserves Open Doors for Free Day Visits
Outdoor travelers in the northern provinces have one final weekend to take advantage of the 21st annual SA National Parks Week. While free day access at Kruger National Park concluded on Friday, September 11, SANParks confirmed that Northern Region reserves remain open at no charge to South African day visitors through Sunday, September 13, 2026.
The campaign gives South African citizens presenting valid identification free access to explore iconic northern conservation landscapes, including SA National Parks Week 2026 Events - SANParks:
- Golden Gate Highlands National Park (Free State): Famed for its towering sandstone cliffs, hiking routes, and crisp high-altitude camping.
- Mapungubwe National Park (Limpopo): Situated at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers, known for its rich cultural history and diverse wildlife.
- Marakele National Park (Limpopo): Tucked into the Waterberg mountains, offering dramatic mountain passes, raptor colonies, and Big Five safari opportunities.
Visitor Logistics for the Weekend
SANParks spokesperson JP Louw highlighted that the national initiative aims to instill conservation ownership and give families and local communities an affordable way to access natural heritage. More than 105,000 visitors took advantage of the initiative across the national park network in 2025, and high turnout is expected for the closing weekend.
Travelers should take note of critical rules governing the free-access weekend:
- Identification: South African day visitors must present a valid green barcoded ID book, smart card ID, or driver’s license at park gates. Children must also be identified with valid documentation.
- Excluded Fees: Free entry covers conservation gate fees for day visits only. Overnight accommodation, camping permits, guided drives, and paid concession activities remain charged at normal rates.
- Gate Quotas: High-demand gates may implement daily capacity limits to prevent ecological overcrowding. Day visitors are advised to arrive early to ensure entry.
With spring temperatures warming up across Limpopo and the Free State, this weekend presents an ideal window for self-drive game viewers and hikers to explore these northern wilderness areas.
