Bontebok Restores Campgrounds and Trails for Spring Campers
Bontebok National Park's phased reopening allows outdoor enthusiasts back onto select hiking trails, campgrounds, and chalets along the Breede River.
Overberg Campers and Walkers Return to the Breede River
Spring campers and hikers exploring the Western Cape Overberg have regained access to key outdoor facilities at Bontebok National Park as SANParks continues its staged reopening program following past winter flood repairs.
Situated near Swellendam against the Langeberg Mountains, the compact reserve protects rare renosterveld vegetation and one of the country's most iconic antelope species, the bontebok. The current operational stage welcomes overnight tent and caravan campers, self-catering guests, and day hikers eager to experience blooming spring landscapes.
Accessible Trails and Camp Facilities
While flood recovery teams continue rehabilitation work on lower riverine infrastructure, multiple trails and camping zones are available for nature lovers:
- Hiking Trails: The Acacia, Aloe Hill, and Termite hiking trails are open, offering gentle routes through coastal fynbos and renosterveld habitats.
- Camping & Caravanning: The main campsite is open to travellers pitching tents or bringing off-road caravans.
- Chalets: Six self-catering chalets are open for overnight reservations.
- Temporarily Closed Areas: Die Stroom Picnic Site, the Bushbuck Trail, and eight riverside chalets remain off-limits while refurbishment continues.
Spring Wildlife and Birdwatching Opportunities
Bontebok National Park remains a standout destination for self-drive weekend getaways and relaxed outdoor pursuits. The reserve’s open plains make it easy to spot bontebok lambs, grey rhebok, red hartebeest, and Cape mountain zebra.
Birders visiting this season can also observe waterfowl along unaffected stretches of the Breede River alongside sugarbirds and sunbirds feeding on flowering aloes and proteas. Hikers and campers heading to the reserve should pack light windbreakers and confirm site reservations in advance to ensure seamless access.
