Bontebok National Park Reopens Following Flood Rehabilitation
Bontebok National Park has officially commenced a phased reopening of its facilities after completing essential repairs following May 2026 flood damage.
A Welcome Return to the Breede River
Following the severe flood damage experienced in May 2026, SANParks has announced that Bontebok National Park is once again welcoming visitors. The park has undergone extensive rehabilitation to restore critical infrastructure, allowing for a phased reopening strategy that prioritizes visitor safety and environmental integrity.
What is Open for Visitors
As of August 2026, the park has restored access to several key areas, making it an ideal time for spring campers and hikers to return to the region. The following facilities are now operational:
- Six self-catering chalets for overnight stays.
- The main camping site for outdoor enthusiasts.
- Three popular hiking trails: Aloe Hill, Acacia, and the Termite Hiking Trail.
Ongoing Restoration Efforts
While the park is partially open, management notes that some areas remain under construction. The eight riverside chalets, which sustained significant damage, are currently undergoing refurbishment and remain closed to the public. Additionally, the Die Stroom Picnic Site and the Bushbuck Trail are still undergoing rehabilitation work. Visitors are encouraged to check the latest updates from SANParks before planning their trip to ensure their preferred activities are available.
