Bontebok National Park Reopens After Extensive Flood Repairs
Following severe weather and extensive flood damage, Bontebok National Park has officially reopened its facilities and trails to the public this September.
Restored Access for Overberg Campers and Nature Lovers
South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed that Bontebok National Park, situated near Swellendam in the Western Cape, is once again open to visitors following months of dedicated repair work. The park had faced significant infrastructure challenges following devastating regional flooding earlier in the year, which had forced phased closures and restricted visitor access to key day-visit areas and trails.
Following site inspections—including a ministerial visit by Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment leadership—management confirmed that driving circuits, hiking routes, and day-use facilities along the Breede River have been safely restored just in time for the spring travel season.
Flood Recovery and Trail Reopenings
The winter deluges across the Western Cape caused widespread damage along the Breede River basin, eroding access routes and washing through low-lying tourist infrastructure. SANParks teams and local civil contractors have completed essential civil engineering works, clearing debris, grading damaged tracks, and restoring boardwalks:
- Hiking and Walking Trails: Popular day trails winding through renosterveld and riverine thickets are back in service for birders and walkers.
- Game-Viewing Routes: Internal gravel loops have been repaired, allowing self-drive day visitors to view the flourishing bontebok population, grey rhebok, and Cape mountain zebra.
- Day-Visitor Sites: Designated picnic spots and river viewing platforms have been secured and reopened for outdoor recreation.
Spring Travel and Camping Prospects
September marks one of the most scenic windows to explore the Overberg region. The blooming wildflower season blankets the coastal and inland renosterveld, providing exceptional conditions for photographers and eco-tourists.
Day visitors are encouraged to confirm daily operational details and river conditions before departing, while campers should monitor site-specific booking advisories as SANParks continues finalizing remaining maintenance throughout the precinct.
