SANParks Announces Free Access Week and 2026 Kudu Awards
South African National Parks has confirmed the dates for the 21st annual SA National Parks Week and opened nominations for the prestigious 2026 Kudu Awards.
Celebrate Conservation: Free Entry to National Parks this September
South African National Parks (SANParks) has officially announced that the 21st annual SA National Parks Week will take place from 7 to 13 September 2026. This initiative, which has become a cornerstone of the local travel calendar, allows South African day visitors free access to most of the 21 national parks across the country. The announcement, made on 24 August 2026, highlights the organization's commitment to making nature accessible to all citizens.
The 21st Annual SA National Parks Week
The week-long event is designed to foster a sense of pride in South Africa’s natural heritage and encourage locals to explore the diverse landscapes managed by SANParks. From the arid beauty of the Richtersveld to the lush forests of the Garden Route, the program provides an opportunity for those who might not otherwise visit the parks to experience world-class conservation firsthand.
- Dates: 7 to 13 September 2026.
- Eligibility: Valid for South African citizens with a green barcoded ID or Smart ID card.
- Exclusions: Please note that free access does not include accommodation or paid activities like guided walks or game drives. Some parks, such as Boulders Beach and Namaqua National Park, may have specific limitations.
2026 Kudu Awards Nominations Open
In tandem with the National Parks Week announcement, SANParks has also opened nominations for the 2026 Kudu Awards. As of 25 August 2026, the public is invited to nominate individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to conservation and environmental management in South Africa. The awards are a vital platform for recognizing the "unsung heroes" of the wildlife sector.
The Kudu Awards celebrate excellence in various categories, including:
- Environmental Media of the Year
- Corporate Contribution to Conservation
- Community Contribution to Conservation
- Wildlife Warrior Awards
Planning Your Visit
With the West Coast National Park currently in the height of its 2026 wildflower season and Bontebok National Park having recently completed its phased reopening on 1 August following flood rehabilitation, September is shaping up to be a peak month for domestic travel. Visitors are encouraged to book their day permits early where applicable, as popular parks like Kruger and Addo Elephant National Park often reach daily capacity during this free access period. This is an ideal time for camping enthusiasts to secure sites just outside the parks to take advantage of the free daily entry.
