Bontebok National Park Welcomes Visitors Back After Flood Repairs
Following severe flood damage in May 2026, Bontebok National Park has initiated a phased reopening, restoring access to key camping and hiking areas.
A Gradual Return to the Breede River
Bontebok National Park has officially commenced a phased reopening as of August 2026, following extensive rehabilitation efforts necessitated by the severe flooding of the Breede River earlier this year. South African National Parks (SANParks) confirmed that while the park was forced to close in June due to infrastructure damage, significant progress has been made to ensure visitor safety.
What is Currently Open
Visitors can now access several popular facilities that have been cleared for use:
- Six self-catering chalets are available for booking.
- The main camping site is open for outdoor enthusiasts.
- Select hiking trails, including the Aloe Hill, Acacia, and Termite trails, are accessible.
Important Visitor Information
While the park is welcoming guests, some areas remain under construction. The eight riverside chalets, Die Stroom Picnic Site, and the Bushbuck Trail remain closed while refurbishment continues. Prospective visitors are strongly encouraged to verify the availability of specific facilities and routes with SANParks before finalizing their travel plans, as the phased approach means conditions may evolve as restoration work progresses.
